Havening Techniques ®

Developed by Ronald Ruden MD, a doctor in New York, from studying the latest neuroscience, Havening is an astonishingly simple means to use the abilities of your own neurology to make positive changes in the way you think, feel and act. It does not involve taking medication, talking about the problem, hypnosis or exposure to the source of the anxiety. It is particularly helpful with:

  • Phobias
  • Anxiety
  • Negative emotions
  • Exam nerves
  • Developing resilience and confidence
  • Sports performance

I first came across Havening in May 2015, and my positive experiences led me to undertake train to become a Havening Techniques Practitioner in November 2015.

If any of the above are issues for you, I am trained to use the full range of Havening techniques - which is particularly helpful if the issues are long standing or involve strong feelings. As part of the process I will help you to learn to use the techniques for yourself.

"I saw Roger for help following a bereavement. I found that the Havening technique helped me to feel relaxed and far more settled in my mind about the situation. Nine months later I am still feeling the benefits. I found havening easy to learn, very calming and relaxing and it really works!" AJ, Leeds

But What is Havening?

But What is Havening?

Havening was developed by Ronald Ruden MD, a doctor in New York State, when he became interested in the question of how one person can have a scary experience - for example, being bitten by a dog - and forget about it, while someone else can have a similar experience and develop a phobia or anxiety for the rest of their life.

He devoted years to studying the relevant scientific research and in 2011 he published the results of his study and clinical experience in his book "When the Past is Always Present”.

Havening and the fight or flight response

Havening and the fight or flight response

The starting point is the “fight or flight response” - the feeling of fear, anxiety or anger, when we feel under threat. The area of the brain responsible for the fight or flight response is the amygdala. When our brain perceives that we are in danger, the amygdala initiates the fight or flight response and various changes occur in our body:

All this happens automatically to give us increased strength or speed in fighting or running away (which is why it is called the “fight or flight response”).

Usually, once the danger has passed, we return to a state of calm and forget all about it. However, sometimes the fear and anxiety can become “hard wired”, with the result that, if we are reminded of any part of the event that triggered off the emotions - even years later - the amygdala triggers off the fight or flight response all over again - and we have a phobia or persistent anxiety.

How does Havening work?

How does Havening work?

The basic technique consists of recalling a stressful experience for a few seconds, and then gently stroking the arms, face and palms of the hands whilst distracting the attention by, for example, imagining walking on a beach. This is repeated until the stress feelings subside to zero, it works whether you do the stroking yourself or someone else does the stroking for you.

Typically someone will report after Havening that they can still remember the stressful event, but that it no longer bothers them. Sometimes, the negative feelings can be alleviated in one session. Sometimes it takes a number of sessions. There are a number of additional Havening techniques where anxiety has been longstanding, or for building up confidence and resilience.

It seems the reason it works is that the stroking of arms, face and palms tells the amygdala that you are safe and that the relevant fear circuits can be turned off. This stroking is something we all do naturally - you have probably comforted a friend by stroking their upper arm, or come out of a stressful meeting and stroked your face with your palms, or comforted a friend or child by holding their hand

Here is a short video (about 20 minutes long) in which Dr Ruden's twin brother, Stephen, demonstrates using Havening to help someone overcome a bridge phobia.

Have a look too at the official website www.havening.org which has a list of registered practitioners (including myself!).

Why is it called Havening?

Why is it called Havening?

Dr Ruden called the technique "Havening" because the stroking tells the amygdala that you have reached a safe place or a "safe haven”.
